Grandma's 80th Birthday Cake

This was Makayla's sixth and final shot (picture four was another shot of the cake and picture five was of Cindy ducking and covering trying to hide from the camera).

A little while later, Grandma finally got off the phone with Louise and cut the cake. All of us who were able to stay long enough had a piece or two. Sorry you and the kids missed out Shannon, it tasted very good.

Mom with her brothers

From left to right: Dan (back row), Art, Ray, Alan (back row), Gwen (my mom), and Don.

Mom is the oldest of Grandma's surviving children. Next oldest is Ray, Art, Alan, Don, and then Dan, who is just two years older than I am.

Grandma's oldest child, my Uncle Glenn, died of AIDS in 1993. It still seems wrong to have a family group picture without him in it.

Altogether, Grandma had ten children, but of those deceased, I only knew Glenn. Mom was not my grandmother's only girl, there were three more that died before I was born. Vera died of crib death (now called, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS). Evelyn and Elizabeth both died in a house fire.

The full list of Grandma's ten children, in order, is Glenn, Gwen, Vera, Evelyn, Ray, Elizabeth, Art, Alan, Don, and Dan.
